Longing for a Life That Is Real, Free and Satisfied

The race for homecoming queen, do you remember it? Even if you were not in the race, you may remember those who were. The honor, the pressure, the competition that surrounded what seemed at the time to be the world’s most important election. Every outfit was planned with much energy. Those running with intentions of winning worked hard to be nice to everyone and may have pretended they liked even the most annoying people. Appearance was everything and votes were at stake. The build-up of who would be chosen for the homecoming court from each grade was heart-stopping. Finally, the names of the court were announced and those chosen felt elated and stressed all at once. Now the field had been narrowed. Those in the race sized up the competition. They compared strengths and weaknesses and mentally criticized their own flaws and obsessed over the strengths of their opponents. Each girl dreamed of the announcer at the homecoming game announcing her name with pomp and circumstance as the most beautiful queen in history. Many contestants competed, compared, controlled, and criticized to conquer the highest high school throne. The funny thing is, even if you won the crown, what does it mean today? Who remembers? Who cares?

More importantly, how many of us still act like we are running a race for homecoming queen! Oh, it might be as the queen of the office, queen of the neighborhood, queen of PTA, queen of the extra-circular, queen of the room moms, queen of women's ministry, queen of decorating, queen of your girlfriends, etc. The list goes on and on. We want to be accepted so badly by others. We want to be a star at something. We want to wear a tiara somewhere. We want to count; have purpose; have meaning. We feel frustrated, exhausted, and trapped by competing, comparing, and controlling. Things we don’t feel are
real, free, or satisfied.

I believe women today are longing to find a life that is
real, free, and satisfying. Running for homecoming queen is endless, exhausting, and it is never enough. Even winning the crown is such a letdown. Real freedom is found when we examine and apply what God’s Word says about a life that is full and free. Real-life is found when we realize that the only crown we want to wear is the one put there by the King of Kings and Lord of Lords!

Rev. 19:11-14, 16 says, "I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True... His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS." How powerful! The crown Jesus puts on our head will be worth wearing. All other tiaras are temporary. As a child of God, you belong to the kingdom of the KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS! Get a hold of that, and you will begin to long to live a life that is real (relevant, empowered, abandoned, living).

Read Rev. 1:4-7 and 19:11-16 and write down all the real things about the King who was, and is, and is to come. Use this prayer to get started:
“Jesus, You are so real! Take my heart of stone and make it soft, convicted anew of my great need to be in Your presence on my face seeking You and You alone. Forgive me for all the unreal things I have made my life. All the pretending and the performing and the proving I have done in hope of finding purpose. Remind me today of my great need for You above all else. Thank You that You are faithful and true even when I am not. Thank You that You are my rider on the white horse I have been searching for. Be my everything!"
