Teaching the Next Generation...

"After that whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation grew up, who...
  • Knew neither the Lord
  • Nor what He had done for Israel." (Judges 2:10)
How tragic!  Not only did the next generation not know God, but they also had no idea of all the great things He had done.  It might seem unrealistic that a whole generation could miss God altogether. How is it that the previous generation that had seen God's deliverance in such mighty ways could fail to pass on the realness of God to their children and grandchildren? Could that happen to us?

This passage caused me to reflect on my role in passing on truth to the next generation. I have always endeavored to open my home to be used as a place of life-on-life discipleship. Can it get crazy?  Yes!  Is it loud? Yes!  Is it worth it?  A million times YES! I am so thankful for the younger generation that comes along with me in my walk with Christ. This can be done through studying God's Word, sharing a meal, sharing a burden, or just spending time together.

Our job as adults is to teach the truth and make it available to the next generation.  Our job is to model the truths we teach and allow the next generation opportunities to walk alongside us and see how we apply truth to real life.  Our job is to seek the Lord daily while He may be found and let others into our lives to observe.

I challenge you to ask God to show you how He wants to use you to pass on the truth to the next generation.  Maybe He wants you to open your home and open your Bible to the kids in your neighborhood.  Maybe it is inviting a college student who is away from home over to dinner.  Maybe it is to get involved in a children's, youth, or college ministry.  Maybe it is as simple as opening the Bible with your own kids or grandkids.  Seek the Lord, and He will use you to pass on the truth to the next generation!
